Inspiration for the Black Opal Series

Hi everyone!  Thanks so much for letting me join you on the blog today.  I’ve really been looking forward to meeting the readers here.

So, our lovely blog host suggested I might shed some light on the inspiration for my new release, Lie to Me, and the team of Black Opals that make up the series.  I’m going to date myself, but… here goes.

As a young girl, I spent countless hours dogging my father’s heels.  (I learned way more about plumbing and house repairs than I want to know as an adult as well, but that’s a different subject.)  One of the things we shared a passion for was James Bond.  I remember being scared initially of Jaws, in Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me, but eventually that giant with the crazy teeth snagged my curiosity.  Early Sean Connery was simply amazing… and all of this culminated in a huge passion for spy thrillers.

It also ingrained the belief that “spy movie” must include the ultimate bad guy “Russia.”  Now bear with me before you start screaming… I don’t hate our Moscovians.

Years later, as a young adult, my riding trainer was from Russia.  He believed in my riding endeavors and spent countless hours at the barn with me talking everything horses and all about his homeland.  That fascination with Russia has stayed with me as I’ve grown into my adult shoes.

So when I sat down to write the first book in the Black Opals series, knowing I wanted a high-stakes thriller with a whole lot of smokin’ hot passion, all of this pointed me to including the things I am most fascinated with and the things that bring the fondest memories.  In many ways, it was like coming home to an old friend.

I was able to dabble in Moscovian culture, create the baddie I’m most comfortable with, sympathize his actions with a true love of the people and culture, and show him not like 007s out and out evil antagonists, but with humanity and even a touch of gentleness. As Lie to Me developed I was able to scratch the surface of some current issues in Russia today, and the research there was simply fascinating.  Learning the political strife, the current conflicts, and so forth helped me to add another layer to Sasha, my heroine.

In the end, I journeyed through bits and pieces of things I’ve come to love and was able to play in a sandbox that I have always been uber-curious about.  And while the series won’t remain embedded in Russian politics, we’ll return now and then.  We’ll also be adventuring to some different places as well.

But be warned -- it’s not for the faint of heart.  If you don’t like heavy action, shadowy danger, and conflicting alpha attitudes that often lead to steamy encounters between the sheets stay far away.   I, however, hope you’ll come along for the ride.

A little about Tori .....

National Bestselling author Tori St. Claire grew up writing. Hobby quickly turned into passion, and when she discovered the world of romance as a teen, poems and short stories gave way to full length novels with sexy heroes and heroines waiting to be swept off their feet. She wrote her first romance novel at seventeen.
While that manuscript gathered dust-bunnies beneath the bed, she went on to establish herself as a contemporary, historical, and paranormal author under the pen name, ** Claire Ashgrove **  Her writing, however, skirted a fine line between hot and steamy, and motivated by authors she admired, she pushed her boundaries and made the leap into erotica, using the darker side of human nature and on-the-edge suspense to drive grittier, sexier, stories.
Her erotic romantic suspense novels are searingly sensual experiences that unite passion with true emotion, and the all-consuming tie that binds -- love...

 Books in the series.

Tori St. Claire's dangerously naughty debut novel, a body of secrets is entwined with a body of lies...and deception is part of the game.
As a member of the CIA's elite Black Opals, Natalya Trubachev must live a lie, working undercover as the lover of Dmitri, a Russian mob boss. His business is trafficking vulnerable Las Vegas strippers overseas for twisted sex games. Natalya's business is to blow the ring wide open and bring down Dmitri and his American contacts. But the stakes are raised when she learns that the next target is her own sister Kate, a dancer in the famed club Fantasia. Only now does Natalya realize how personal her mission has become, and how far she's willing to go to complete it.
The manager of Fantasia is Brandon Moretti, an undercover detective who keeps a close eye on his girls, and an even closer one on his sinfully sensual newest hire. For Natalya, working the club could be the break she's been waiting for. But for Moretti, Natalya is a possible link to a killer. Only he never counted on her being so lethally seductive or so dangerous to get close to. As every forbidden pleasure between them is stripped away, his own secrets threaten their security, but it's Natalya's secrets that could destroy them both.

Book two

After helping to break up a Russian human trafficking ring as part of the CIA’s elite Black Opal team, Alexei Nikanova’s newest assignment is to rescue one of the stolen women and return her to her father. When he arrives in Dubai, he discovers his target is Sasha Zablosky—a woman he knows all too well, and who has haunted him ever since their one unforgettable night together. But he finds Sasha reluctant to leave her Sheik, the only true friend she’s ever known. Only Alexei can’t give her a choice.

With their yearning roused by intrigue, Alexei and Sasha can no longer resist and spend night after night in forbidden pleasure. Soon Alexei finds himself falling for her even as he battles a shadowy menace to protect her. But Sasha is no innocent. She has a past darker than she could ever admit or that Alexei could ever forgive. And it is about to explode into her life once more. Now, as the lies they tell themselves—and each other—pull them deeper into a perilous desire, what began as simple passion becomes a love certain to destroy them and end the lives of countless innocents.
