Believe like A Child - Paige Dearth

I was contacted by Paige asking to review her book and upon receiving her email , left it be and returned to it later. Only reason being I read the first few lines and wasnt sure if this genre was for me.. Dark, scary and somewhat way to close to the horrific truths in life.

Upon reading her email again I decided I wanted to help at least one of Paige's dreams come true -  to become a best selling author. After reading Believe like a Child, as  dark and haunting as it was I just couldnt put this book down !! Find as follows the cover, blurb and my thoughts. It took me a few days to get over this book, so if your an emotional reader this will certainly tug at your heart strings !

Alessa is just seven years old when her uncle rapes her for the first time. As the years pass, his sexual appetite becomes more voracious and his perversion more twisted, until the abuse has become almost a daily ritual, with the unspoken involvement of the girl’s mother.

At the age of sixteen, after the death of her only friend, Alessa finds herself at the mercy of her real-life monster, with no relief in sight. She flees her home to escape this hell, only to find herself descending into a more dangerous one. Alone and helpless in the streets of North Philadelphia, she encounters more human predators who want to take over her life and devour her. About to hit rock bottom, Alessa manages to break away from her new tormentors and finds refuge in a shelter for homeless and abused women.

Wherever she goes, however, trouble keeps seeking her out, until she meets three people who change the course of her life forever. Though Alessa’s bittersweet journey is perpetually fraught with challenges, she does, nevertheless, manage to find fleeting moments of joy along the way. But as she begins to settle down, a ghost from the past comes to haunt her again, threatening to destroy the very foundation of her small world and plunging her back into an abyss of despair, until she makes her final bid for escape

MY THOUGHTS

Believe like a Child is a haunting part Fiction part true story of Alessa, a seven year old girl who is sexually abused by her uncle as a child, abused for ten years of her youthful life this not only defines Alessa, but also makes her grow in more ways than one.

Upon receiving Paige’s quest to review her debut novel I was very hesitate and slightly deterred. The nature of the story I was very unsure about, normally I would not read something along this line. But upon reading the first few lines I already had Goosebumps, unsure if I could read such a dark and haunting story I read on to read that Paige's goal is life was to be a bestselling author. I then replied and wanted to help her dream come true.

Believe like a Child.

Alessa is alone, young naive and scared - she runs away from home to find that not only in the confines of her own home are they monsters but also throughout the streets she walks. Alessa embarks on a journey of survival, pain and hurt. But the things that happen in her life has defined the person she wants to become, not what she has been. Finally Alesssa finds light at the end of the dark Tunnel she meets Remo, finds love and yearns to help others and help them from their depths of despair. Alessa's past comes back to haunt her sending her spiralling back into her past, .................... An unpredictable ending.. I was heartbroken ...

Paige Dearth has created Believe like a child with such vivid and dramatic descriptions - It’s filled with emotional angst, unpleasant and informative moments and quiet graphic details. Her characters are created with such life, and the pain put forth can only come from someone whom has survived such an ordeal. This is not a read for the faint hearted. Believe like a child is a powerful story of Alessa - a child of incest - rape - and many other things one could never imagine possible. This story revolves around the sexual abuse not only of Alessa but many children whom then flee their homes to be free to be left homeless, hungry , alone and willing to do anything in order to survive.

Paige has written a powerful story that will not only touch your heart, but have it aching in sorrow at what people can do and also the small things that people do - that’s means a lot.

Paige has created characters whom will drawn you into the pages, having your heart breaking, your tears running, and your temper raging. All the characters created in this book are well defined, each having there own traits which not only defines them but gives them that place in the story.

Paige has put forth Alessa's life, a compelling story that will certainly sadden your heart. It will have you weeping all the way through. As horrific as some scenes maybe and as the story is put forth I was unable to put this story down. I was drawn to this story, because I wanted to see where ALessa's life went. From dealing with the sick sexual needs of some people to moving on with life, to find love and happiness, this story has come from within.

Three people can change the course of ones life, through Alessa’s horrific journey, faced with more challenges that one person would normally see in one lifetime she soliders on …… Determined, to be more than her past.

Believe Like a Child will take you on a ride that will open your eyes to the horrific truths to what does actually happen in the world – every single day…. Its filled with many emotions: betrayl, pain, anger, hurt, love, trust and hope. Im sure as the reader you will also feel these as your read along with the story, it will pull you into the pages, and as horrific and terrible the ordeal is ,, it will compel you to read on.

I must say a dramatic ending that will have you sobbing and wandering WTF>>> I must say I didnt see it coming and my heart ached after I turned the last page. Not the ending I was hoping for at the least !!!

Paige has done a wonderful job with this novel, her debut ** Believe like a child ** .. I hope that this story takes her to where she wants to be. Its been a roller coaster ride For Paige and as a reader one can only hope her dream with this incredibly written story will be the dream she has always wanted.

BE WARNED - IT DOES CONTAIN GRAFFIC AND SEXUALLY EXPLICIT DETAILS THAT MANY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE IN LIFE. REGARDING RAPE,CHILD MOLESTATION ,HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND PROSITUTION. THE NOVEL OPENS UP THE READERS HEART TO UNDERSTAND HOW SMALL ACTS OF KINDNESS PROVIDE THE PROTAGONIST OF THE STORY HER GREATEST MOMENTS IN LIFE. (( Note taken from letter from Paige Dearth

I rated this book 5/5 !! It took me days to get over this book ! The emotional reader I am - those last few pages where definetly the icing ripped straight off my happy ever after ! :'( UNPREDICTABLE !!!

About this author

SOME DIRT ON PAIGE:

Born and raised in Plymouth Meeting, a small town west of Philadelphia, Paige Dearth was a victim of child rape and spent her early years yearning for a better life. To escape the unwanted attentions of her molester, a pedophile uncle who lived with the family, she married at the age of nineteen and moved with her new husband to Chula Vista, California. After two years of marriage during which she struggled to make ends meet, she became pregnant, only to discover that her husband was a heroin addict. Paige waited for the birth of her daughter and when the baby was just eight months old, moved back to Pennsylvania. With no formal education or money to fall back on, she courageously set out to pick up the pieces of her shattered life and make it whole once more.

Living through the fear and isolation of her youth, Paige developed the ability to create stories that would help her cope and finally put them to use by embarking on a series of novels. Believe Like A Child, the author’s debut offering, is the darkest version of who she could have become, had fate not intervened in the nick of time. It presents a fine balance between what lives on in her imagination and the evil that lurks in the real world.
